March 2012

Welcome

Welcome to the second edition of the Office of Research Reach Newsletter. I hope you enjoy this snapshot of the activities and successes of some of our colleagues.

I’m especially excited to share with you the research capacity building underway in health informatics. Our focus on health informatics builds on the College of Medicine’s strategic investments in RedCap, a research informatics tool, and leverages interests and expertise in big data challenges in the health sciences in at least six of our colleges and schools - the iSchool, the School of Public Health, the College of Nursing and Health Professions, the College of Medicine, the College of Engineering and BIOMED. With leadership provided by Pru Dalrymple, Director of Drexel’s multidisciplinary Institute for Health Informatics, four brand new research teams are off to a really promising start - read about them here.

The feature on Chris Li's small structures points to the continuing importance of discovery of the small – commonly known as "nano" for nanometer (– 10-9 meters) – science and engineering. In early March, we convened a new Task Force, co-chaired by Jonathon Spanier and Frank Ferrone, to identify the research infrastructure needs of our growing community of “nano” scientists and engineers.

Finally, in April, we will begin a series of activities designed to showcase our social sciences community, celebrating our colleagues’ many contributions to our knowledge enterprise, and positioning them for even greater success in the future. Lisa Bowleg and Richardson Dilworth have agreed to co-chair the committee charged with designing these activities.

Many thanks to all of our colleagues who are participating in these important capacity building activities.
