Welcome to the second edition of the Office of Research Reach Newsletter. I hope you enjoy this snapshot of the activities and successes of some of our colleagues.

I’m especially excited to share with you the research capacity building underway in health informatics. Our focus on health informatics builds on the College of Medicine’s strategic investments in RedCap, a research informatics tool, and leverages interests and expertise in big data challenges in the health sciences in at least six of our colleges and schools - the iSchool, the School of Public Health,the College of Nursing and Health Professions, the College of Medicine, the College of Engineering and BIOMED. Faculty Jump Into Health Informatics

Four research projects in Health Informatics will be funded as part of the Office of Research's first Jumpstart process.

In November, Jumpstart brought together faculty from across the University for two days of brainstorming and collaboration. The emphasis was on connecting faculty that had never worked together, said Dr. Michele Marcolongo, Senior Associate Vice Provost for Translational Research. Drexel was the first university in the country to try Jumpstart, which models the National Science Foundation's Ideas Lab. Read More »

Professor To Take Helm At APA

Dr. Donald Bersoff is home again. Well, maybe not literally. But 23 years after serving as the first in-house counsel for the American Psychological Association, Dr. Bersoff is now serving the prestigious organization as its president-elect.

A professor in the Earle Mack School of Law and in the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Bersoff is the director of Drexel University's joint JD-Ph.D program in law and psychology. Students who complete the program, which takes seven years, go on to practice law, become involved with public policy or conduct research. Read More »

Big Things Come From Small Structures

The future is small. Really small. And it's growing in Drexel University's own back yard through a special material called carbon nanotubes.

Dr. Christopher Li, a professor in Drexel's Materials Science and Engineering Department who joined the university in 2002, became perhaps best known for his pioneering research around carbon nanotubes, which was published in Nature Nanotechnology in 2009. Read More »
